About Field Touring

FTA has been developing and operating alpine and expedition programs at the highest level since pioneering dozens of Karakoram treks for University students in the early 1990's. Originally operating solely out of Western
Australia, we now have an office catering to US and European clients in Massachusetts, USA, and field offices in season in both Mendoza Argentina,
and Skardu, Pakistan.

Leading the way...

In 1997 Field Touring became an expedition and guiding company, and managed to maintain its ethos of low cost and high quality despite having left the embrace of the University. By this point the company had taken people to the highest point on the Earth's surface, to the top of the world's highest active volcano, to the top of the highest peaks in North and South America, on the longest ice traverse in the Himalayas, and forged new routes into areas that were, until recently, just 'blanks on the map'.

Along the way we pioneered the first Australian organised efforts on the volcanoes and mountains of Ecuador, and became extremely proficient in Pakistan adventure tourism, taking more people there than all other Australian based operators put together. In 1998 National Geographic TV filmed a feature production on our South American expedition. A second film shot by FTA principal Dave Hancock in 2002, also on NGTV, is still showing world-wide and to date has been seen by some 40 million viewers.

We spend your money carefully so you reap the rewards...

We have chosen to specialise in a few very well organised and led climbs or treks each year and do not produce glossy and expensive brochures, or pay travel agents commissions to book positions. That instantly brings the trip fee down by around $1000 per member, and ensures your money is spent where it should be - getting the best possible ground based services and support, and guidance in the field or on the mountain.

Experience counts...

Whether its Aconcagua or a Karakoram 8000er, a trek through the stunningly isolated Snow Lake or a tailor made adventure into Patagonia, you can be assured of the best possible service and support. Expertise only comes from experience, and with 15 years and nearly two thousand satisfied clients and expedition or trek members we can rightly assert our professional advantage.

When many companies were sticking to the same Annapurna or Everest treks in the 1990's, we were forging new routes through the wilds of the Karakoram and hills in Ecuador that had never seen an organized ascent. Our work on Aconcagua, chronicled on National geographic TV, saw us take 4 cameras to the summit over a period of 2 years and via 3 separate routes.

Our western staff have been an integral part of the company for many years, together with long associations with our local suppliers and use of the best possible porters and climbing staff in the Himalayas, they make for an efficient and professional operational team in the field.

The way we climb mountains or go trekking...

Our programs are patronised by climbers and trekkers of all ages and varying degrees of ability. What our members do have in common however is a desire to be a part of an experience that is a real expedition. We supply the infrastructure, and quality support, while encouraging our teams to contribute towards decision making processes and being an integral part of a team.

You move at your own pace, and can make as many decisions for yourself as you see fit within the constrains of the safety net put in place by your team leader.
Our staff are there to not only make sure you stay safe and maximize your personal experience, but to meld the trip around your personal desires and anticipated outcomes as best as circumstances allow. By logistically catering to the needs of flexibility, you can essentially undertake any of our trips on your own terms, and in pursuit of your own goals.
